Head of Department: ass. prof. Wojciech Debski

The Department is composed of two laboratories:

Mining and Engineering Seismology Lab - head ass. prof. Wojciech Dębski

Seismicity induced by mining is of serious concern in Upper Silesia and Lubin Copper Basin in Poland with several thousand tremors recorded annually. Studies of induced seismic events are carried out on basis of data obtained from numerous local seismic networks operated by the mining industry. Studies concentrate on the determination of source parameters and source mechanisms of seismic events. Another area of study is seismic tomography, in aim to monitor the parameters of the rockmass in mines which change as effect of undergoing excavation. Observation of changes of such parameters may contribute to assessment of current level of seismic hazard. A still further area is the development of theory of rupture generation and wave propagation for the particular case of underground mines.

General Seismology Lab - head dr Paweł Wiejacz

The lab is composed of four sections:

Bulletin section - headed by mgr Barbara Guterch The section occupies with preparation of final seismological bulletin from the observations of Polish seismological observatories. This deals mostly with evidencing mining induced seismic activity in Poland but any natural seismic events taking place on Polish territory are subject to thorough analysis as of its location and energy. Macroseismic intensity studies are also carried out whenever needed. The bulletin section also deals with historical seismicity of Poland.

Datacenter section The section deals with routine operation of Warsaw datacenter that analyzes data from unmanned seismic stations in Poland, collects seismic data from all stations and observatories in Poland and exchanges it with international datacenters and seismological institutions of neighbor countries. The section maintains a digital data archive and carries research on natural seismic events in Poland or in nearby countries.

Seismological observatories are the observatories KSP, RAC and OJC with its substation NIE. The staff at these observatories is carrying on-site observations and provides maintenance for these sites.

Crust and mantle studies section - headed by prof. Edward Perchuć This small section (two people) carries studies of the deep structure of the Earth crust and upper mantle using observations of earthquakes from digital broadband stations.
